Broiler Farming Method
Things to Know Before Starting a Broiler Farming Business
Currently, one million entrepreneurs and eight million people are commercially involved in the production of 10.22 billion eggs and 1.46 million tons of meat, with chicken meat or eggs being cooked in almost every household at some point every day in Bangladesh. Despite such demand and the vast number of people involved in this sector, not all farmers are making a profit. This situation is due to several factors, such as the instability of the prices of feed, chicks, eggs, or meat, none of which are within the control of small-scale farmers. However, by paying attention to certain aspects, a farmer can easily make a minimum profit of 10% to 15%. Let's find out how to start an ideal farm.
Selecting the Location
The location where you establish the farm should have certain characteristics:
1) The area should be elevated to prevent flooding during the rainy season.
2) It is beneficial to have large trees around the farm as they help keep the farm cooler during the summer.
3) The farm location should be free from noise pollution.
4)There should be good roads to the farm to facilitate easy transportation of broiler chicks, chicken feed, and market-ready broiler chickens.
Note: If there is insufficient road access, buyers may demand a lower price due to transportation difficulties, potentially causing financial losses for the farmer. Additionally, transporting chicks and feed might incur extra costs, ultimately increasing the overall production costs.
5) The farm should have a proper water supply system. It is best if there is an arrangement for a personal pump.
6)The farm should have a good electrical setup, with enough switches and sockets to facilitate necessary electrical connections.
7)It is beneficial if the farm is open on all sides, at least on two sides. Particularly, having openings facing east or south is advisable, as it helps in ventilating ammonia gas produced from chicken excrement.
Establishing the Farm
Broiler chickens can be raised using the litter, raised platform, and cage methods. Regardless of the method you choose to raise broiler chickens, your farm should have the following characteristics:
1) The farm floor should be at least 12 inches high from the ground and solid to prevent rats or snakes from entering. The floor of the farm should also have a slight slope to allow water to drain away during cleaning.
2) The walls around the floor should be two feet high, and the remaining part up to the roof should be enclosed with netting. To prevent fog in winter or rainwater in the rainy season from entering through the net, arrangements should be made to cover it with tarpaulin or polythene.
3) It's good to have adjustable fans for ventilating the inside air.
4) There should be facilities at the entrance of the farm to disinfect the feet and body.
5) Each broiler chick needs 7 square inches of space, and adult chickens require 2 square feet of space.
